The highly anticipated God Of War Ragnarok update 5.01 has arrived, bringing with it the free Valhalla DLC that Santa Monica Studio revealed last week. This meaty update adds an exciting new roguelike mode for all players to enjoy, as well as special rewards to earn.

(GOW) God Of War Ragnarok Update 5.01 Adds Valhalla Free DLC: Explore What’s New

Downloading and Accessing the Valhalla DLC

The version 5.01 update for God of War Ragnarök clocks in at a sizable 2.7GB. However, players will need to head to the PlayStation Store and download the Valhalla DLC pack separately, which rings in at around 8.2GB. The DLC content is not automatically included in the base game patch.

In order to access the new Valhalla DLC content, players will need to have the full God of War Ragnarök game installed and updated to version 5.01 first. If you are re-downloading Ragnarök and grabbing the Valhalla pack at the same time, be sure to wait until the base game is fully installed before booting it up. Trying to launch the DLC before Ragnarök is ready will result in an infinite loading screen.

Once God of War Ragnarök and the Valhalla DLC are completely installed, players can access the new content from the main menu in the game.

Exciting New Roguelike Mode

The headlining new feature in the 5.01 update and Valhalla DLC is an intense roguelike mode. Roguelike games have surged in popularity over the past decade thanks to wildly successful titles like Hades and Returnal that offer addictive, rewarding gameplay through randomized levels and permanent death mechanics.

In Valhalla mode, Kratos once again finds himself trapped in the icy clutches of Helheim. But this time his escape won’t be easy. The roguelike format means each attempt to fight your way out of Helheim and reach Valhalla will be completely unique, with elements like enemy types, bonuses, and layouts varying each time. Death also comes at a heavy price, forcing players all the way back to square one.

This creates high stakes and encourages careful, tactical play to survive for as long as possible. With deadly new frost and flame-themed foes blocking your path, the journey out of Helheim will test even seasoned God of War veterans. Tempting buffs like Rage Fury and Health Burst can potentially turn the tide, but grab them at your own risk – they may come with crippling curses as well!

The promise of spectacular new rewards is sure to keep fans playing run after punishing run as they inch closer to escape from Helheim. Scoring an elusive Anchor of Fog reward, for example, will make future runs a bit easier. For true smug satisfaction though, players will want to push themselves to finally be successful and unlock brag-worthy Valhalla themed armor pieces, weapon pommels, and shields.

What’s Next for God of War Ragnarök?

God of War’s new Valhalla mode is a tough challenge for fans, sparking speculation about more DLC. Ragnarök has been a huge success, selling 11 million copies by December 2022, compared to the 2018 reboot’s 19.5 million over several years. Santa Monica Studio is known for post-launch support, and fans hope for new content in 2023, given the open-ended Norse saga ending. Exploring Nine Realms and facing gods like Odin is anticipated. Update to version 5.01 for the Valhalla DLC, and stay tuned for more surprises in Kratos and Atreus’ future adventures.
